Dutch 🇳🇱 and Norwegian 🇳🇴 soldiers swap rations 🍽️ meals ready to eat | Army food taste test

Norwegian soldier Nadia and Dutch soldier Arnold trade MREs in Lithuania — and things get unexpectedly real. Jelly bean debates, a pasta that "tastes like lasagne", and a Tikka Masala that wins everyone over.

Deployed together as part of NATO's multinational battlegroup in Rukla, Lithuania, two allied soldiers open up their field rations and swap meals for the day. The Dutch MRE packs peanuts, fruit biscuits, beef jerky, muesli popcorn, and a pasta and herb sauce Arnold calls "like lasagne." The Norwegian ration answers with chocolate muesli, a blueberry protein bar, Colombian instant coffee, Pasta Provence — and a Tikka Masala dinner that earns the highest rating of the swap.

The Hungarian Lynx armoured infantry fighting vehicle

Hungary has invested heavily in a modern tracked fleet as part of its wider defence modernisation effort, ordering more than 200 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles from arms manufacturer Rheinmetall back in 2020.

In response to growing threats to security, Allied Leaders decided at the NATO Summit in The Hague in 2025 to significantly increase investments in defence, reaching 5% of GDP by 2035. This decision ensures the Alliance will keep protecting its one billion people now and in the future with enough forces, resources and capabilities.

Investing in modern capabilities plays an essential role in future-proofing NATO’s defences. The new Lynx vehicles, due to be adopted by other Allied armies as well, are now contributing to strengthening NATO’s defences along its eastern flank.

This video takes you inside this modern vehicle, through the roles of a commander, gunner and driver, and shows why upgrades like this matter for NATO’s readiness and collective defence.

How to survive in the winter wilderness with NATO's battlegroup Estonia 🇪🇪

If you find yourself stranded in the winter wilderness, how do you survive? This is an eventuality the UK troops that make up part of NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Estonia – with the United Kingdom as framework nation – train for on the Cold Weather Operator’s Course, which takes place every year in Estonia.

This NATO battlegroup also includes contributions from other NATO Allies, including Denmark, France and Iceland.

As part of the course, the soldiers must spend two nights in the Estonian forest learning how to build camps, make fires and find food and water. The course helps the soldiers adjust to different climates and terrains and makes sure they’re ready to operate in cold winter conditions.

Here, chief instructor Colour Sergeant Sykes of the UK Royal Marines gives his top tips for anyone thinking of heading out into the winter wilderness.

Smooth and rapid movement of troops and equipment is vital for NATO operations. So how does the Alliance move its gear quickly—throughout NATO countries and across borders—while also keeping civilian motorists safe on public highways?

This video features a unit of Polish Military Police officers and showcases the work that they do to maintain road safety during military operations and exercises. During exercise Noble Jump 2019, the Polish Military Police’s Zagan Section escorted a force of 2,500 German, Dutch and Norwegian troops and 1,000 vehicles as they tested their ability to deploy swiftly to Eastern Europe.

NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Estonia put their trench warfare skills to the test, drawing lessons from Ukraine’s defence efforts.

Facing off against a British and French opposing force equipped with Warrior infantry fighting vehicles and Challenger 2 tanks, Estonian military conscripts were tasked with defending a trench system. The exercise tested both sides: for the Estonians, it was about resilience and tactical discipline under fire; for the British and French, it was about mastering trench assault techniques and applying lessons learnt from Ukraine’s frontline trenches.

NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Estonia - one of eight Battlegroups deployed along NATO’s eastern flank - defends the Alliance against potential aggression. Led by the UK and reinforced by troops from France, Poland and the U.S., the Battlegroup trains alongside the Estonian Defence Forces to ensure that NATO’s deterrence remains credible, capable, and combat-ready.

Finland 🇫🇮 - prepared for crisis

Finland has one of the most comprehensive disaster response systems of any country in the world.
After losing 90,000 people in the Second World War, the authorities in Finland put measures in place to make sure that if it happened again, the nation would be ready.

From underground shelters in all buildings over 1,200 square metres to training exercises involving the police, fire department and medical services, Finland is prepared in case any crisis should strike.

NATO’s multinational forces in Latvia are a key part of the Alliance’s deterrence and defence posture along its eastern flank.

Led by Canada, troops from 14 Allied nations work side by side with the Latvian National Armed Forces. Originally established in 2017 as a multinational battlegroup, the unit has since expanded to brigade level, bringing together armoured, artillery and air defence elements capable of rapid reinforcement if required. Regular joint exercises ensure that soldiers from across the Alliance can operate seamlessly together, ensuring the ability to defend NATO Allies.

Latvia is also further protected by the new NATO activity ‘Eastern Sentry’, which boosts NATO’s vigilance along the entire eastern flank with more air, land and sea-based military assets. Established in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Hungarian Army leads a NATO multinational battlegroup that includes troops from Croatia and Italy. A Turkish mechanised infantry contingent also stands in reserve, ready to reinforce the battlegroup if called upon.

The forces include battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, heavy mortars, artillery and air defence as part of its combat power. Hungary is also further protected by the new NATO activity ‘Eastern Sentry’, which boosts NATO’s vigilance along the entire eastern flank with more air, land and sea-based military assets. The activity also includes innovative technologies to tackle new challenges, like the ones we see from drones. NATO's presence in Estonia 🇪🇪

NATO maintains a robust and continuous presence in Estonia as part of its commitment to collective defence.

At the core of this presence is NATO’s multinational battlegroup, led by the United Kingdom. The battlegroup conducts regular joint training with the Estonian Defence Forces, ensuring high levels of readiness and interoperability in the event of a potential crisis. If needed, the battlegroup can absorb thousands of additional soldiers and grow in size to a brigade.

In the air, NATO contributes to the security of Estonia’s airspace and the entire region through the Baltic Air Policing mission. Allied fighter jets operate on a rotational basis from Ämari Air Base in Estonia, maintaining a 24/7 quick-reaction alert to deter and respond to any unauthorised airspace activity.

NATO’s multinational forces in Bulgaria anchor the Alliance’s military presence in southeastern Europe.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a NATO multinational battlegroup was formed and led by the Italian Army, with recent troop contributions from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania and Türkiye. Based in Novo Selo, the group regularly trains in combined arms manoeuvres, learning how to simultaneously use artillery, heavy armour and mechanised infantry to leverage their full combat power. If necessary, it can absorb thousands of additional troops and grow in size to a brigade.

Ready to rapidly deploy and defend the Alliance, the battlegroup is a strong symbol of assurance for Bulgarians and other Allies in NATO’s east, as well as a potent deterrent against aggression.

NATO demonstrates new technologies

Innovation is vital to our security. NATO armed forces must adapt to fast-changing threats and technologies. From artificial intelligence to cyber defence and space systems, emerging capabilities are reshaping the way conflicts are fought. By driving Alliance-wide innovation, NATO ensures its forces remain effective, interoperable and resilient.

At exercises REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Uncrewed Systems) and Dynamic Messenger 2025 in Portugal, NATO Allies, partners, industry and researchers came together to test drones, sensors and communications at sea, on land and in the air.

Several new projects were on display. For some, NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) has already helped turn ideas into real capabilities, connecting innovators with real-world trials and making it easier for Allies to adopt new technology, work together and strengthen defence.

NATO tanks show their firepower in Latvia 🇱🇻 | Iron Spear tank competition

NATO armoured crews from across the Alliance come together every year to compete in live-fire and tactical challenges at Ādaži Training Ground, in Latvia. During the competition they exchange tactics and deepen their ties in an event that proves their skills and put their heavy machines to the test.

The Iron Spear 2025 tank competition tested tank crews on gunnery accuracy, coordination, and combat readiness under simulated battlefield conditions - a powerful demonstration of NATO’s strength, unity, and preparedness on Latvia’s soil.

Participating nations included Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, operating main battle tanks such as the Leopard 2 and Challenger 2.

Beyond the competition, Iron Spear underscored NATO’s commitment to collective defence and its ability to operate as a cohesive force.

Drones | Lessons from Ukraine 🇺🇦

In Ukraine, drones have transformed the country’s fight for freedom. From the earliest days of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, drones have offered Ukrainian forces a cheap and effective way to try to level the playing field. They’ve had to innovate to avoid being overrun.

NATO is working to identify and apply lessons learned from Russia’s war against Ukraine through the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) based in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The centre is contributing to NATO’s deterrence and defence, and increase the ability of Allied and Ukrainian forces to operate effectively together.

Separately, NATO Allies are also learning from the experience of Ukrainian veterans.
In Poland veterans of the Ukrainian Army recently shared their knowledge of drone warfare with soldiers from the United Kingdom and the United States. In this video, we hear a former drone operator talk about his frontline experience with drones, and why sharing his knowledge with NATO troops is so important.
