The fall of the Wall was facilitated by both the increasing crisis of the Soviet regime and the substantial rise of protest movements behind the Iron Curtain. The success of protests in Poland, where the Polish labour union “Solidarity” (“Solidarność”) managed to be legalised and won the partially free elections held in the country in 1989, kicked off peaceful demonstrations in all Eastern Europe, leading the Soviet regime to collapse. This event in 1989 marked the first turning point in NATO’s history. From that moment onwards, the Alliance had to reshape itself to face new challenges and opportunities coming from a new political climate.
