Exercise Cold Response brings together tens of thousands of soldiers from across NATO — but it's the Norwegians who teach them what survival and combat in the High North truly requires. Steep mountain terrain, limited daylight, and extreme cold demand a fundamentally different approach to military operations Norwegian Army forces train year-round in conditions most militaries rarely face. That hard-won expertise is now being passed on to allied nations: US Marines — some of whom had never seen snow — mastered Arctic operations in just three weeks under Norwegian instruction, learning everything from how to use cold-weather clothing and equipment to how to manoeuvre and fight in winter warfare conditions.
