Shortly after the formation of NATO in 1949, the NATO Standardization Office was created in 1951, in an effort to improve interoperability between the various forces now operating under the NATO umbrella. Each NATO member state ratifies a Standardization Agreement, or STANAG, and implements it within their own military.
